Bald eagle

Sax Zim Bog, MN

A lot of people don't realize that the eagle is a scavenger. Not to the same extent as a vulture (which eats only carrion) but they will take advantage of any free meal that they find. Especially in a harsh climate like this. A vulture wouldn't be able to rip into a fresh deer hide like this eagle is easily doing. The deer in the photo was road kill that someone dragged into a field. However, a lot of eagles eat deer carcasses left by hunters and as a result, many suffer and die from lead poisoning.
