One of the six stations set up for flashes. We have 3 flashes which are connected to the PC terminal of the camera. Shutter speed must be set to the sync speed of the flash (in my case 1/300 sec) because the flash isn't connected to the hot shoe. I stayed at about f/18-f/22 and ISO 100-400 depending on the amount of ambient light. One flash is aimed at the background (45 degree angle), and two toward the bird. More flashes could be used, but three is the minimum.
The power ratio of the flashes is set at 1/64. This is key because there is no shutter speed faste enough that can capture the wings of the hummingbird. So the 1/64 PR of the flash creates the effect of about 1/8000 sec shutter speed, and this is what freezes the wings. It's the short duration of the flash which makes this possible. If found that shutter is speed is mostly irrelevant when using this setup (I went as low as 1/25 and really couldn't tell a difference.) We can't shoot in burst mode since we need about 1 second between shots to recharge the flash (longer if the flash is set at a higher power.)
