Financially, The Salvation Army was a "hand-to-mouth" organization in the first half of the 20th Century...especially in depressed areas such as Appalachia. Here in Cumberland, Kentucky an officer stands on the sidewalk soliciting coins for the Army's Christmas programs. A short distance away, my parents were engaged in similar fund-raising in Harlan, Kentucky -- hard hit by a prolonged coal miners' strike.
