This was the corps building in Harlan, Kentucky...deep in the Appalachia mountains. Again, we had to live upstairs over the corps. The area was divided into sleeping rooms by 6-foot partitions. Interestingly, a female lieutenant (assistant officer) lived there with us. On one side of the building was the town's only movie theater, which was where David could be found most afternoons after school (he got in free!). On the other side was a brothel, and across the street was a tavern. You might say that we were in the very heart of Harlan's entertainment district.
