Human beings are plagued by animosities and hard feelings towards each other.
This is a great image depicting individual competition and confrontation.

I am quite skeptical about this sentence by Herman Hesse. This reminds me of the apology of poverty that will get you heaven, while the wealthy enjoy their life on earth. A way to justify some immoral things. At least it is for a good cause here. That being said, I like even better this image of human relations.
