Rhodostethia rosea. This rare visitor from the shores of the Arctic Ocean - only the second California record - was found by Don Pendleton in Pillar Point Harbor in San Mateo County on January 12, and remained in the vicinity until January 14, when it was predated by a Peregrine Falcon. These photos were taken on the 14th at the Brussels sprouts field across SR 1 from the Half Moon Bay Airport, where the bird spent most of the latter part of its tragically short stay. The last four shots on the page are a burst showing the gull apparently lunge-diving for some sort of food in the flooded field.
