An unprecedented invasion of Cook's Petrels appeared off the California coast in the spring and summer of 2009, with hundreds seen on pelagic trips in both the northern and southern parts of the state, many within several miles of shore. This small seabird breeds on islands near New Zealand, and in most years is only occasionally seen in small numbers far offshore in California. These birds were in Monterey Bay on August 2.
