I've created this gallery to showcase Minnesota's most iconic lighthouse....heck, most iconic thing period. Without a doubt, the lighthouse at Split Rock State Park is the most photographed subject in the state. And with good reason. It was constructed in one of the most beautiful settings imaginable...an imposing 130 ft high cliff jutting out into the icy, blue waters of Lake Superior along its rugged north shore.
The decision to construct the lighthouse was made in 1905 after a number of shipwrecks occured during a particularly fierce storm. Construction was complete in 1910 and the lighthouse was operational until 1969. In 1971 it received historical landmark status. Soon thereafter, over 2000 acres of land adjacent to it was set aside as a state park.
Every year on November 10 and 11, the lighthouse's beacon is lit in memory of those that lost their lives in the tragic sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975.
