I spent an extended holiday up on Lake Superior's north shore over Christmas, 2004 with the hopes of getting a real taste of winter (as it has been way too uninteresting in the Twin Cities so far). I was not disappointed as ice, snow and bone chilling cold were there to greet me. Temperatures as low as -24 F occured in the morning hours. The wind chill approached -50 F the first morning as well. The D100 definitely deserved a merit badge for its performance in this frosty environment! Still it was necessary to utilize a two battery system, with one in the pocket warming up (and regaining its charge) and the other quickly draining in camera. During the cold mornings, I found I had to keep swapping batteries every 15-30 minutes! Braving the cold did not come without it rewards though. This was by far the most beautiful I've ever seen the area. Frozen rivers and waterfalls, ice and snow-covered shorelines, and an abnormally high concentration of great gray owls and bald eagles were the main attractions. The owls in particular were an unexpected bonus as they have headed south from their usual Canadian wintering grounds due to a scarcity of food there. If you are a bird watcher/photographer and live near this area, this is the winter to visit.
