Yesterday, at the Boston Museum of Science, my son was chosen (yet again) as a volunteer in a Science show. Prior to getting chosen a lot of the parents were remarking how he'd been chosen at every show including the previous trip two years ago and on Saturday. Somehow, he got picked out of the crowd again on Sunday when the demonstration involved shooting an ordinary pencil into a 3/8" piece of plywood. He got to verify the pencil and the wood before the experiment. The pencil was shot out of an air cannon and penetrated the plywood, lodging itself about 2/3 of the way in. It was pretty cool. What was even cooler was the fact that my son got to keep the plywood with the pencil sticking out of it. I was immediately worried about the logistics involved in transporting said treasure all the way home. We still had another couple of hours at the museum, then we had to grab our backpacks, walk back to the train station, board the train (with McDonald's food), disembark at our stop, load up our Tahoe, and finally get home. Somehow it all worked out. He wants to bring it in to school tomorrow, the "logistics worrying thing" is kicking in again.
