Bird banding assists in the study of bird dispersal and migration patterns, behavior and social structure, life-span and survival rate, and reproductive success and population growth. In the United States, the program is controlled by the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The Lewiston Banding Station, one of several in New York State, is located at the 3-F Conservation Club in Lewiston, New York. It was started in 1976 under the direction of Mr. Jerry Farrell to band migrating birds in both the spring and fall with a special emphasis on the warbler family group. Jerry holds a Federal Master Banding permit and is one of only 2000 in the U.S. licensed to use mist nets.
