Australian Satin Bower Birds

In March/April the Bower Birds have made another bower in our yard, so now there are two. Last year's bower is still in use, but I don't know if it's used by the same male or if there are now two males. It was the first time the Bower Birds have built a bower in our yard, and I've been able to witness an amazing display of courtship. The male bird collects anything that is blue. I've put out blue bottle tops, blue pegs and blue tiddly winks, and they're now all at his bower, along with pieces of blue hayband. I also noticed they liked picking up some yellow leaves. They are really pests of birds, eating flowers, carrots in the garden, and any cabbages or green vegetables in the vegie garden.

i love them they are so graceful and they are filled with colour's! i remember being a kid doing a project on them!:) they are so amazing! the bower filled with blue is incredible! (my favorite colour is blue!) p.s I'm 4rom Australia NSW!!!!!!!!!! (NEW SOUTH WALES)

What a lovely view of nature you have in this nest and two visitors. You're description #9-29 are hilarious! I was laughing out loud. Wonderful commentary.
The females colors are very pretty. She's not drab like most females.

Just seen my first female satin bowerbird yesterday,pinching the cats food on our back verandah.Spent last night searching the web for its name,thank you great photos.It amazes me how far they travel I live in middle of Sydney

It was hard to identify what was making these always present husky tin can sounds until I discovered that my friendly Magpies and Black Magpies (Kurrawongs) liked eating rolled oats! My balcony here in Mount Victoria NSW now has the following strict pecking order. The 4 Magpies are in charge and eat first, followed by the Black Magpies on their own or flocks, followed by the stain bower birds in flocks of up to 20 at a time and occassionally rosellas. All the bower birds are of the greenish spotted variety. They have gone from being illusive to visable. And together with the Magpies and Black Magoies have taken to tapping on the balcony doors and windows if they want rolled oats. Fascinating. Many thanks for the pics that have at last identified them!

My wife and i have been wondering for years what these birds are that come into our yard to feed on our advocados that fall to the ground from March till May each year here in Coffs Harbour N S W thanks for the identification

Hi,
Very interesting, and clear pictures.
This afternoon as I was coming home, I spotted something next to a recycling bin, when I got closer I noticed that it was a female Bowerbird chick. I have taken it home and put it into a large cage with towels, and water but what do they eat? Have searched the net but all I seem to find is data about their mating ritual.
Anyway, have phoned wires, and left a message.
Living in the Lower Blue Mountains we get to see a lot of wildlife.
