STAND Tall giraffes raised more than £115,000 for charity when they went under the hammer at Firstsite.

The 30 giraffe figurines, which have been dotted across the borough since June 2, were auctioned off at a gala evening at the art gallery to raise money for Cochester Zoo’s charity, Action for the Wild.

About 300 people attended the event last night, run by Colchester auctioneers Reeman Dansie, with some giraffes selling for between £6,000 and £7,000.

Big Catrina, designed by Alison Burchert, was the top-priced giraffe, which sold at £6,800.A PHONE app has been launched to help mark a Colchester Zoo milestone.

Stand Tall, which celebrates the zoo's 50th birthday, will see 30 2.5m giraffes figures dotted around the town, each with a unique design.

The giraffes will be on show from June 2, while 82 other smaller models created by primary school children will be located indoors.

The app, for iPhone and Android phones, will also be launched on June 2, challenges users to find all 30 giraffes.



Each giraffe is marked ‘found’ using GPS or by scanning a QR code next to the model.


For each user who discovers ten giraffes using the app, Costa, in Lion Walk and Culver Square, will give them a free drink.

Everyone who discovers all the giraffes will be entered into a draw to win a £7,000 safari holiday.

Other prizes on offer include overnight breaks with Holiday Inn, giraffe toys from Williams & Griffin and free happy meals from McDonald’s.
