From September 2010 to April 2011, troops from Colchester-based 16 Air Assault Brigade served in Afghanistan.

Corporal Rupert Frere is a professional Army photographer and his work covers the Brigade's tour, from pre-deployment training to operations in Helmand Province and ceremonial events on its return.

While in Afghanistan, Corporal Frere was able to join operations considered too dangerous for civilian photographers and frequently found himself putting down his camera to take on the role of an infantry soldier.
