Of course it is a star of David and the person you talked to did not know what she was talking about. The Book of Mormon is a history of various people and tribes that migrated from Jerusalem before the time of Christ and populated the American continent. The LDS people believe in Old Testament prophets like Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and others like Noah and Isaiah. They study and learn about Saul, David the Philistines, and so on. The basis of their beliefs come from the Old and New Testament as well as the Book of Mormon, which is a second testament of Jesus Christ. No LDS person I know about would say that they are the lost tribe of Israel. That person you talked to was either not LDS or had a very poor grasp of her own religion.

A photography forum such as this is really not a place to denigrate or comment on religion and I only bring up these few points because of your less than kind comments toward the LDS people.

I visited Temple Square in the 1980s and, as someone who is Jewish, I was astonished to see that particular symbol above the Assembly Hall. When I asked the guide about it, she said, "That's an ancient Mexican symbol." When I explained to her that it was a Star of David, she came back with "Well, you know, the Mormon's are really the lost tribe of Israel." I try to be tolerant... I really do... but I have a very hard time having any respect at all for these people.
