Multnomah Falls

Columbia River Gorge, Oregon USA

Multnomah Falls is one of the most visited sites in the state of Oregon. Its two tiers drop a total of 620 feet, making it the second highest year-round waterfall in the country. Samuel Lancaster, builder of the Columbia River Highway, described it thusly... "There are higher waterfalls and falls of greater volume, but there are none more beautiful than Multnomah".

Simon Benson, who used his lumber riches for philanthropy, donated funds for the land encompassing Multnomah Falls and for the 1914 construction of the Benson Bridge, which spans the chasm above the lower tier. This is one of very few man-made edifices that I have no problem including in my photographs (although it is quite rare to see it completely devoid of people).

As with the rest of the Columbia Gorge, Multnomah Falls keeps changing due to the water flow. This fact was illustrated on September 4, 1995, when a 400 ton boulder as large as a city bus slid from from the rock face and dropped 225 feet into the upper plunge pool. It spewed water and small rocks 70 feet over the Benson Bridge.
