Ah, I see that you made it down this way last year. I'm glad that you were able to see some of the local wildflowers. We didn't get a chance to visit Death Valley (or many of the other places that were covered in blooms), but we did enjoy seeing a lot of the best places within a day's drive from San Diego.
We saw chia like this at Anza-Borrego State Park. Later we saw some chia seed pods at Joshua Tree NP. Those points get quite sharp when they're dry.
