Uncommon winter visitor, November through March, primarily in Coastal region. Rare to Uncommon in Lowlands, more frequent nearer to coast. Rare in Mountains and Desert. Rare breeder in Oceanside area, most recent nesting records are from Whelan Lake Bird Sanctuary.
Habitat: Deep lakes and lagoons.
Best locations: Mission Bay, Libby Lake Park in Oceanside, Buena Vista Lagoon.
