Scotney Castle

New images are at the start of this gallery

Scotney Old Castle was originally built between 1378 & 1380.
Later Scotney New Castle was built between 1835 & 1843.
Both castles are still standing, though the old castle is now more of a ruin.
Both castles are set in different areas of the estate, with the newer one overlooking the old castle as it is perched on higher ground.
A long steep gradual bank leads to the old castle. The old castle was kept in its ruined state as a garden feature for the new castle.
The old castle has a moat around it and its setting is quite romantic with the reflections setting it off beautifully.
There are still many details of the ruin left but the east side was partly dismantled at the completion of the new castle.

The National Trust was left the estate in 1970 following the death of Christopher Hussey the last previous owner.
Some of the apartments in the castle were let out and the then, Prime Minister Margret Thatcher rented the Belfry Flat to escape Westminster for a weekend getaway.

Very interesting gallery. The National Trust preserves so many historical places that deserve to live on. How interesting that Margaret Thatcher had a weekend apartment here at one time.
