Q7 No 901:
This giant of an engine, the first of its class, was designed for hauling heavy goods trains.

WORKING LIFE:

• 1919 Built at Darlington’s North Road Works.
• Capable of pulling over 800 tons.
• Worked on many parts of the North East and particularly on the Tyne Dock to Consett Iron-Ore Trains
• The engine was unpopular with crews as the third, middle cylinder was difficult to maintain, and the large boiler made the cabin small and cramped.

PRESERVATION:

• 1962 Withdrawn from service and reserved for the National Collection.
• 1990’s Restored to working order and run on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
• On loan from The National Railway Museum in York.
