The Bridge House

Ambleside, Cumbria

This is the famous Bridge House and possibly the most photographed house in the lake district. The house which consists of one room upstairs and one room downstairs was built over Stock Beck to avoid land taxes. It is said that a family of six once lived in the bridge house. Once five mills where powered by Stock Beck. In 1926 a group of locals bought the house and handed it over to The National Trust so it could be cared for. It is now a National Trust Shop.

What an interesting and inventive person to build like that eluding the expense of taxes.
Great photo and lets hope you are standing on a bridge and not ankle deep in water.

A very inviting place to sit and watch people walk by. Michael is very familiar with this house as you say. He says you can't miss it since there is only one main street :))) V
