It was a joy to watch this female Pileated woodpecker foraging for insects along with her mate who happened to be nearby. She was digging into some insects on a dead tree and using her tongue to lap up some that had fallen onto the ground as well. I watched all this unfold while standing only a few feet away. I never get tired of watching this bird in action. From its bright red crest and large size to its unique call the Pileated is quite something to behold in action and particulary from up close.
