The furious flapping of tiny wings caught my attention as I drove along a country road looking for birds to photograph this past summer. I got out of the car to inspect what looked like a trapped bird along the fence. One of its wing was looped through a dangling wire, trapping it and dooming it to a certain death had I not happened by. I took a close look at the wing to see how best to free it. It was entangled in there pretty badly so "unthreading" it would have been a bad idea. I didn't want to chance breaking any of the small bones in the wing. After assessing the situation I took a pair of pliers from the car and carefully untwisted the wire that was wrapped around the wing. I checked him over to make sure everything was OK and then released it back to the wild. I also found it neat that a couple of fellow barn swallows had perched very close to the trapped bird calling to it as if very concerned about their friends predicament.
