Red-eyed Vireo

Ottawa, Ontario. Canada

Red-eyed Vireos are common around here (they can be heard more than they can be seen) but I have never seen one until today. As often happens I just about walked right into my new bird sighting. Saw this grayish coloured bird land right in front of me.....the good thing was I didn't recognize it (meant new species for me).

I pointed it out to a fellow photographer and he started looking around. Suddenly he noticed a nest hanging from a tree limb about 8 to 10 feet off the ground. Of course as birder/photographers our eyes lit up big.

Both parents took turns bringing food back to the nest. There was a flury of action....it seemed like both adult birds were coming back to the nest with an insect every minute or so. One would feed the insect to the babies and then hear the other one coming in and instinctively know to get out of the way.

There are two babies in the nest. One looks more ready to leave the nest than the other.....flexing its wings and grooming itself. Soon enough quite a few birders had gathered to watch. They knew it was a Vireo but couldn't put a finger on the exact type. Finally, I think a few concluded it was a Red-eyed Vireo based on some markings. After looking at a photo I had taken of one of the adults I think it is a Red-eyed Vireo. The nest was mostly in shade so had to use flash.
