Solar prominences or filaments jut out from the sun's surface. Prominences typically extend over thousands of kilometers with one record estimated at over 800,000 kilometers long.
Scientists knew they were in for a treat with the April 8, 2024 eclipse because the sun was near or at solar maximum with many sunspots and activity.
