I was at first surprised by how low this nest cavity was situated but after reading up on the barred owl, I see they are known to choose a natural cavity, 20–40 feet high in a large tree. I have seen nest cavities much higher up at 60+ feet.
This nest location has almost no shade at the present moment, so imagine the male would roost in nearby conifers during the day. The nest fulfills one known preference of the barred owl and that it is located near a source of water (creek, stream, pond, marsh or wooded swamp).
