My favourite owl to see in the wild. I knew about its presence and location several weeks ago in early January but had no time to search. Too busy with the short-eared owls. I did go for one quick visit 3 weeks ago but did not walk around much. I recently found out it was still there.
Northern hawk owls normally like to perch very high but at dusk they begin to roost for the night. The owl was well camouflaged in shade (not in colour like you see in the photo - it was gray against a gray tree). Everything was blue-gray and dark. So, I was looking for any odd owl shape or silhouette. Once located, I went to the other side to see it more in the open and took the photo.
