Prothonotary Warbler

It had been a number of years since I last visited Point Pelee. A family trip to Toronto gave me the opportunity to make a one day trip to the park. One day is better than none. Although I heard this year wasn't the best, the sight of these bright yellow Prothonotary Warblers made the trip worthwhile. The red-morph eastern screech owl didn't hurt either. Great to be back at Pelee. The prothonotaries are believed to be nesting in the area...and have been for a few years now...and vigorously defend territory against much larger birds such as Baltimore Orioles and similar sized birds.

In past years this nesting location had been heavily visited by both birders and photographers (I have been told). I have heard the stories of long lines of people 3 deep across the long boardwalk. I am not exactly sure when parks people started to impose time limits for viewing these birds but it was a pleasure just to see these birds up close with binoculars. Sometimes you get fortunate and catch one perched much closer although the above image was a heavy crop. A good documentary shot anyway. I did run into a couple who had been watching these birds for a couple of weeks.
