Great Blue Heron and one that got away

Ottawa, Ontario. Canada.

At first I thought the Great Blue Heron had a clump of grass between its bill. From another angle and upon closer inspection it turns out to be a huge bullfrog. It was amazing to see that bullfrog hanging there like that. I guess it was too large for the heron to swallow so it dropped it and went looking for smaller prey.

Thanks Jim (I hear you :-), Rachel and Hank. Good running into you too. Great timing on our part huh? I could probably go back there a few more times and not see anything like that. Hope you had some clearer shots of that big bull-frog. With my 400mm lens I finally managed to back up far enough to get a clearer shot. By then the heron was already dropping the big frog back into the water. I have a shot of the water splashing.

Great shot! I've seen them swallow some pretty big fish, but that would be like a human trying to swallow a turkey.
