Kuli'ou'ou Trail, Aug. 2009
The trail promises a grand outlook at Waimanalo and the former Bellows AFB. It begins at the end of Kala'au Pl., which forks to the right off Kuli'ou'ou Road. Parking can be difficult. 1st time I came, there was no parking and instantly a local started yelling at me that he would tow my car should I stop anyplace on the turn-about. I decided to return another day rather than risk towing, but the weather was not on my side. You can't predict the weather. It can happen that the only reward will be seeing 'white milk' at trail's end. In a weird way, I found some of these fog-laid scenes quite fascinating. Elevation difference is approx 1800'/545m in a 5 miles round trip. In his book, Stuart Ball calls it "novice to intermediate with a low level of danger," but I found the hike strenuous. |
