Ka Lae, Southernmost Point in all of the US (17. Jan. 2007) We took the route 11 from Hilo to Kona, leading along the south slopes of Mauna Loa. The route leads through the Ka'u district, barely populated. Past Kilauea the clima is changing quickly into a semi dry or very dry landscape. Along the way we passed a few smaller towns, of which Na'alehu has the honor to be the Southernmost Town in the US. One interesting stop is past the town of Wai'ohinu: an 8 miles long road forks from Highway 11 and leads to Ka Lae, the South Point. This is presumably the place of landing of ancient Tahitians on Hawaii, who eventually spread across the entire archipelago and became Hawaiians. The area is declared a national landmark. On the edge of the cliffs you can see several boat hoisting racks in different stage of decay, and metal bar ladder leading to the Ocean. |
