Flight to Kilau`ea at Sunset, Jan. 2007 Jan. 2007 was a very wet month on Hawaii's windward side. It just would not stop to rain. After a few aborted attempts we finally took off for an evening flight to better see the glow of lava in the declining light. After our takeoff we flew first north along Hamakua Coast to spot the Akaka falls. Low clouds kept our hopes low, but finally we found a break in the clouds and we were able to see these magnificent falls from above. Afterwards we followed the shoreline from Hilo to Kilauea. Since the shoreline was on our right, I remained on the right sit in this flight. From Hilo I made my so far only takeoff from the right sit. We saw some nice lava flow. However the summit of Pu'u O'o Vent, the current center of eruption, was shrouded in clouds, and so we never saw it from above. We returned to the shoreline to see some spectacular glow at dusk and returned to Hilo in the dark. |
