Web site of the museum contains plethora of information about its history and about its collection. Bishop Museum is the largest of its kind, a must see for everybody interested in Hawaii and Polynesia. This gallery has now somewhat a value of a memorabilia: The Hawaiian Hall was closed for approx. 2 years 2007-2009 for a comprehensive restoration.
The Hall was reopened to the public on August 8, 2009, and the content of the Hawaiian Hall is now completely different...

Photography in a museum is sometimes a tricky undertaking. Many of the images cannot be really too perfect. The artifacts are mostly behind glass. Polarization filter can eliminate some of the reflections on the glass, but a dusty surface will disperse the light and defeat even the best filter...

On the first image you can see the entrance prices as of 2002. They seem high, but rest assured: It's worth it! Remember that you will also get opportunity to see a Hula performance aimed toward historic authenticity. Some of the performers are docents on the University of Hawaii and are quite prominent in their field.

Yes, the main hall of the Museum was in need of conservation! We are members of the Museum, and we saw in Ka`Elele Journal of last year a note that the main hall will be closed for comprehensive renovation. Seehttp://www.bishopmuseum.org/special/renovation.html . Museum provides also a 12 pages brochure with details of what will be done. Expected time of reopening is 2008. We will be back!

A fabulous museum but I was sad to see the sorry condition of the Hawaiian Hall which houses the priceless treasures of Polynesian history. I commented on the noticeable water damage and obvious need for repairs to the roof and was told the powers that be preferred to spend the money on planetariums and science exhibits. Those are worthy works but can be found in profusion else where the artifacts stored in the crumbling Hawaiian Hall can't be.
