Magnum P.I. Estate From Above

Waimanalo, HI 96795: It is a special address for all fans of Magnum P.I. This is where the series was filmed 1980 to 1988. In reality this estate should be rather called the "Anderson Estate," but for the friends of Magnum P.I. this will always be Robins Nest, owned by the fictional, famous writer Robin Masters.

April 2018: Robins Nest demolished! Thus these images are now a form of a documentary how the estate once was. This TV station posted drone images of the premises in April 2018. Not sure for how long this footage will stay online!

A few images of the larger vicinity of Waimanalo show the breathtaking scenic surroundings of the Estate. Another object of interest is the Makai Research Pier, which in the series was the location of T.C.'s chopper company "Island Hoppers."

Images were taken on 1. October 2002 from a Cessna C-172, which I piloted by myself. Some of these images are quite similar to each other and none of them is really perfect. Instead of making my selection, I posted them all. Take your own pick!

Reading all of these comments let's me know how good Magnum PI really was. One of the best shows ever. I was able like many of you to visit the estate recently. Sorry to see the estate in such need of repair. Maybe one day this grand place will be restored back to its former glory. Another well know place I visited was the house used in the James Bond movie...Thunderball in Nassau, Bahamas. I was lucky enough to visit the estate with the owner. I suppose these places for some of us stands out with with great curiosity and intrigue.

Reading all of these comments from Magnum PI fans lets me know how good the show really was. And a good family show if I may say so. I, like so many of you have visited the estate. Sorry to see it in the state it's in now. Perhaps one day it may become open to tourists? I certainly hope this grand place will remain for years to come. And perhaps it will be restored back to it's former glory. I was able to visit another famous estate like the Anderson Estate. It was the house used in the James Bond movie...Thunderball located in Nassau, Bahamas at the Rock Point location. I was lucky enough to visit the house and grounds with the owner of the estate. I suppose there is something about these places that just stands out with some of us with great curiosity and intrigue.

I have also visited Robin's Nest. wondering if anyone has bought it since Mrs. Anderson's passing. Just learned that most of the inside shots we're filmed elsewhere. I wish I didn't know that, because like all Magnum PI fans spent a lot of time trying to figure out rooms in the house. On the other hand I learned the house was used for Hawaii 5-O on occassion. Can download episodes inside the house at Amazon if anyone is interested. TMI ?

We just returned from Hawaii, and thanks to you and a few other photographers, we were able to find the estate with no problem. We headed there at low tide and walked the beach down to the estate. I had a wonderful time playing in the tidal pool and taking lots of photos. Mahalo and Aloha!!

aloha- being from the state of hawaii(oahu) and growing up in honolulu and seeing dso many tv shows and movies being flim in my home state hawaii now that dog da bounty hunter and a&e tv is fliming dog the bounty hunter in hawaii. the 1 thing i do really miss back home is not seeing the cats of magnum p.i. fliming all the time in person back home in honolulu and the magnum red ferrie seeing tom selleck driving the magnum red ferrie any more in honolulu. and yes i was not the only person that love magnum p.i. so much and get to see the cast and crew flim in person too in honolulu. but come to find out that my boyfriend mike also loves magnum p.i. tv show too. and mike is also the fan of magnum p.i. too. and seeing the cats and crew filming at robin master estate in waimamalo in person all the time that robin master estate is getting to be famous now in hawaii.

I hear you Scott! Higgins would have a cow to see this property now. This compound was an excellent back drop for the Magnum P.I. series/franchise. Ballisario did a great job in production as well as all of the cast and crew. Maybe another reunion is in the works?! One could only hope!

Hey Folks! Canadian here, love Oahu, just returned from Oahu last week and visited the estate while I was there. I spoke to some locals at the beach park located two properties down from the estate, they spoke of a young man who currently lives there, owns two large great danes and if the gate is open, they say he is very friendly and is open to people snapping a few shots of the grounds. Don't bother ringing the buzzer, so many tourists are after ringing this, he just doesn't answer. However, once tide is low, you can walk around the break water and snap pics of a very overgrown yet fond memory guest house and grounds. Brought back so many wonderful memories!! I'm so looking forward to watching the show once again!! Ps. We found the locals very happy and helpful, not at all a troubled area. Happy Hawaii all!!!

HI GUYS From the very 1st show I was hooked,watched every episode & also have all DVD collections,and a TEAM RING. I watch MAGNUM P.I.at lest 2 or 3 times aweek, for the exception of NCIS & THE UNIT there's nothing much on tv anymore.When the MAGMUM movie is made the org.cast should be used.Not to knock the other guys they are trying to get BUT, they are NOT MAGNUM!!!!Thanks for all 8 seasons. I'm not sure, but I believe the neighboring property was used as well. In the episode "Tropical Madness" in Season 2, Higgins and the girl skeet shoot in front of it. I took some pictures of that as well if you like.

A friend of mine talked to me about this website and it's pretty amazing - I must say. I live in Canada and I've been to Hawaii twice but never visited Magnum's estate (I actually drove by wihtout knowing it was there - if only I knew, I would have paid a visit around there). I'm interested in the story of this property and the owner, Mrs Anderson. This property has so much potential. One of the guests below claims it's worth $35 millions. Where does that figure come from? I don't know the Hawaian real estate market, and I understand that Magnum adds value to the property, but this price seems a little high. I was looking for Marco's site (sorry it's gone) but I was lucky enough to find yours and the wonderful pictures. I was im Oahu with my son and grandchildren in July 2006 and the vist to Robins Nest was the highlight of our trip. We swam in the tide pool behind the estate and took a lot of pictures. I hope Ms. Anderson doesn;t mind. Even though the tide pool in in a public area, I am sure she enjoys her privacy. I am also a fan of the Hawaii 50 reruns and have seen the Anderson estate in some episodes - it also appears that some interior shots were used - going in and up some stairs - it looked very much 1920's style. I know that Magnum used the studio for their interior shots (thanks from info on Marcos web site, but on Hawaii 50 it definitely seems they went inside. Anyone have any info on this? Thanks again for the pictures.

Hello, I have been working on the Anderson Estate for the past year doing remodeling and lots of refurbishing and upkeep. Mrs Anderson is a wonderful person she does not understand why there is so much interest in the estate, I told her that I loved the show watching it when I was in High School as I am now 36. The grounds are incredible as I walk around what memories. Everything looks the same. I always picture Higgins and the lads but it is so quiet. It is really incredible being here as a fan I feel so lucky. I loved magnum and still watch. anyway take care all you fans of the show.

Mary Ann: you can get to the lighthouse, you just have to take the "no entry" sign the Hawaiian way. In my case, since I approached the path from above and ascended into it, I have not even seen the "path closed" sign. It was only on the way out that I saw the gate and the close sign. I am not even sure why would someone post such sign on this path, which appeared quite safe to me, opposed to the Waimanalo side of the hill. The Waimanalo side was literally scary, and I have chosen to hike on the inner side of the mountain away from the steep cliff. What surprised me on the site of the Lighthouse were gun shot holes in the glass and in the tower. How horrible that someone would discharge his/her gun on a landmark.

We took a hike up to the lighthouse at Makapu'u and it was a spectacular sight. Being a lighthouse collector, we were very disappointed that we could not get to the lighthouse, only see it from the hill above. I did get plenty of pictures of the beautiful view.

Hello everyone . Well I got to see the famous Robin Master's estate in the first week of May . You don't get to see a lot from the outside , but it still means a lot just to be there . Now when I watch the shows , I can say , I was there . On my way back home to Prince Albert , on the plane , I sat beside a woman who lived in Waikiki beach . She was on her way to visit her son in Detroit . She told me that when the show was still in production , Higgins stayed at the condo she lives in . How cool is that ! I told her that I got to see where the show was filmed and how much it meant to be there . Hawaii was a lot of fun . Thanks to PJ for making this trip happen . I could not have done it without you . Hello to fellow Magnum, P. I. fans from a great grandma who just can't get enough of Magnum! I am presently watching the reruns on WGN in Chicago (9 a.m. CDT) and my husband thinks I am crazy...I have been watching them over and over, ever since the series ended. In November of 2006, my two daughters and I went to Hawaii, and I insisted that we go out to Robin's Nest on the last day, before returning home. I had mapped the way 6 months ahead of time!! It was the highlight of our week in Hawaii for me. I took my trusty Nikon and got a few great photos of Waimalano Beach and one of the entrance gate...but as so many of you have said, it was impossible to shoot through all the foliage and tarps that protected the place from viewers. Since the tide was rising, I could not walk throught he water to the beach side, and I was very disappointed about that. I took a lot of photos of the beach, Rabbit Island, and surrounding areas. We continued on into Waimalano, where I looked for a gift shop to see if they had any momentos of the series. I was saddened to find that the Magnum, P. I. series has faded away into oblivion there, and was just a slight memory for those I talked to...no momentos anywhere, and I was told that I would have to "go to Honolulu" to find any. While cruising the islands, my two daughters and I visited "Mauishirts" at Lahaina, Maui --they carry the famous Red Parrot shirt that Magnum wore so often in the series. In this store, they have only "Paradise Found" brand Aloha shirts and dresses...the company that made Magnum's famous red shirt. In the center of this small store is a huge framed poster of Magnum in his Farrari. So he still "lives" in the islands!! Theposter was so large, it seemed as though he might talk to you!! The red parrot material is available in men's and women's shirts and women's blouses and dresses, as are most of the other shirts that Magnum wore...one in particular I especially liked was the black background Star Orchid pattern. We came back with lots of Aloha items,-- mine were patterns that were chosen by Tom Selleck for his Magnum role. What a find!! Like the rest of you avid fans, I am waiting for the last two DVDs to come out of seasons 7 and 8. I am so eager to have the complete set!! Let's all pray now that DVDs will never be replaced as technology progresses. I just could not bear it if I couldn't always have Magnum, P. I. available to see. The main thing about the series, no matter how many times I view it, is that it never gets boring, and it always seems to lift my spirits. The adventures are still as exciting as ever (even though I know how they all turn out), and it can always make me laugh. "My little voice told me" that you would enjoy reading this, and "I know what you're thinking" right now --if you haven't made the pilgrimage to Robin's Nest and the surrounding areas, you really must put it on the top of your list of places to visit before you die. Before I leave you, I will pass along Tom Selleck's fan mail address: Tom Selleck, 331 Sage Ln., Santa Monica, CA 90402-1119 Recently I sent him a fan note at this address, and he was kind enough to send back a black and white 8 x 10 signed photo...perhaps he will do the same for you. As he has grown older, I have enjoyed him in the made-for-TV westerns that he has starred in...so my photo was of one of his western characters. Went there in January it was great spent the day on the beach. Even heard the owner Mrs Anderson taking to a passer by about Magnum PI and how they wanted to land TC helicopter on the roof for an episode but she wouldnt let them. It was great although the guest house is in a sorry state. Was a long trip from England but was worth it. Very easy to find look out for the big tree on that road then take next right and park your car.

The pictures are great. My wife visited in September of 2006 and we walked around on the beach side. Very easy to get to if you park at the public beach access just north of the property. We got some pictures of the guest house, the main house and the property. We couldn't believe the condition of the guest house. Also, the concrete seawall was damaged quite a bit along with the chain link fence was rusted out and in bad shape. It was quite an experience though just to be standing there where all this took place. I am an avid fan of Magnum but have a few questions for the real fans. The guest house is close to the tennis courts, but why in many of the episodes it shows Magnum drive up to the main house and then walk around to the south side of the house to go to his quarters. Was this just because it was easier, quicker and more practical to film that way? One more. One of Magnum's friends, Mac, dies in one episode and then comes back as another guy working in naval intelligence. I can't remember his name. It's the same episode that he tells Magnum he was a priest. Then I just a later episode(1985 I think) and Mac was back again as himself helping with security at the estate. Hello everyone . I am such a fan of the show . I am waiting for the complete 8 seasons DVD set that I just oredered . Now for the exciting part . In the month of May this year I will go and see Robins Nest and get a few pictures of me at the estate with the help of my Hawaiian friend . It's going to be a vacation of a lifetime . I have great love and respect for the show and I'am an advocate of preservation. Heck, last year I almost bought an 82' Ferrari. Maybe this summer... As a small (and reputable) construction contractor, I would love to donate my skills and time to help the "Estate" retain it's beauty for generations to come.

Is the owner of Robin's nest planning to sell the estate? Who is the owner? It is a shame to have let it run down that way. My husband lived in Hawaii for 12 years, he went to University of Hawaii, and actually participated in some of the filming for Magnum P.I. We go to Hawaii every year for about two months, but never experienced driving to look at the estate in our recent trips. The next time we visit Hawaii, we will go there. I have always been curious to find out if the owner sells the estate, how much the asking price would be. Thanks.

Yes Bruce, as you wrote that you "were disturbed at the condition of the estate," I was reminded of my wife's reaction, who outright said to me that on our next stop in Waimanalo she would not walk to the Estate anymore, because she feels sad about its decay. We also saw with astonishment how in recent years the windows in "Magnum's Home" got broken, vandalized, and finally boarded up. Would you expect that on an "exotic Island," or so we think? Sometimes I am asking myself if this development was not caused by picture galleries, such as mine, which instructed so many people how to get there. I am planing to put up a gallery showing how the Guest House has changed year by year. It is definitely sad, this should not have happened.

Just got back from the islands. I have been an avid Magnum fan from the beginning. Thanks to your pictures, I was able to find and walk around the estate easily. My wife and I were disturbed at the condition of the estate but we both had fun peeking over the fence and me in various "Magnum" poses for pictures. Magnum PI was my favorite show for many years. I still remember thinking "no, no, no, It can't end like this!" in the “Infinity and Jelly Donuts” walk into the white screen. I've been to the island three times and this last trip was the best. Next time I will answer, yes, to "Did you see the sunrise?"

I visited the estate last week...well, from the outside. You cannot see anything from the street side. However from the beachside (accessed from a small public park just to the north of the property) you can get a view of the Guest House and part of the grounds. Everything is in a disturbing state of disrepair, there is a significant amount of work going on but the Guest House is boarded up and fenced off separately.

Thanks for the great pix Thomas, I just returned from Hawaii and was able to spend Labor Day on the Estate Beach. What a great place. Even with high tide it was still a good size beach and as close to a private beach as you could hope for that close to the city. It really helped that the Shriners. (next door property) were having a big bash and they had Police traffic control so I even had great security for my car while I was on the beach. You have to love the seawall bench for dozing & tanning off of the sand. Thanks again for the great reminders here. Carl

I've been to the estate several times as I know the owner. It is a beautiful place. To respect their privacy, I'm not going to say much more, but it has been in the owner's family since the 1920s and is approximately 3 acres. The real estate value is absolutely HUGE.

I have been a Magnum PI fan since day 1. I was in Oahu in 1988 a few days after the last episode was shown. In the tour of the island then, we drove pass the estate and had a fabulous view of the coast. But your pictures are just superb. They bring back so much memories of the series and its locations. It's so nostalgic! Especially your pictures of the estate and surroundings in 2002! Seeing the Main House and Guest House (so abandoned!and forlorn looking) actually made me misty! Thanks for the memories!!

Magnum PI, complete third season is out on DVD in the USA January 31, 2006. Keep the pressure up on Universal to release the rest of the series.

Great photos! I visited the Magnum estate with my family last June! The lagoon there is a great place to swim with kids. I learned about the spot from my boss who's in-laws live down the street! Very cool to see it from the air! Thx.

Thanks for the pictures and description. I was able to easily locate the estate. Me and my family were able to swim on the beach (june 16 2005). The water was amazingly clear and calm (thanks to the rocks). If anyone is interested in swimming there, remember there is a beach access parking lot just to the north of the estate. All the beach is public access, so don't worry about swimming there. If anyone is interested, I have about a dozen pictures that I took from the beach side and while I was in the water.

September is by far the "BEST" month to be Hawaii. I have been there in June,July and August as well and they are nice but not as nice as September. Late November to around the end of February is their winter so the weather can be wet. June to October are the best months in Hawaii.
