Dwarfed by the surroundings, our photo freight grinds up the one percent grade eastbound
at MP 82.4. Most of the landmass the CMR crosses is considered "unstable ground." When
trapped water wets a clay mineral of volcanic origin that makes up much of the landscape
here is funnelled over underground surfaces it causes the earth to move, sometimes with
devastating results. One of these geological events occured on trackage that the train
has just travered which prompted the CMR to station an earthmover here permanently.
