Northern Saw-whet Owl

Road trip .... bucket list mark-off .... Floyd, Fiona (my dogs) and I traveled to NW Arkansas and stayed in a Lazee Daze cabin in Eureka Springs so I could attend the current Saw-whet Owl migration study. University of Arkansas Senior Mitchell Pruitt is in his second year with the study for his honors thesis; studying the 'possibility' of Northern Saw-whet Owls passing through Arkansas during their migration. Ah ... yes they do migrate through Arkansas! Last year Mitchell and his honors advisor, Dr. Kim Smith, (among others) worked the mist nets and captured 2 owls. This year, the numbers are up to 17 (I think I'm correct on the number). I was able to attend the late night activities Sunday and Monday nights at the Ozark Natural Science Center in Madison County. Two owls were captured and banded both nights. Awesome experience for me to get to see this beautiful, tiny owl. Once captured, the owl is taken inside, weighed, measured and banded. Sex and approximate age of the owl is also determined. Photos were taken during the banding process, then once the owl was released back outside, photo opportunities were available IF the owl sticks around for a short time.
