I mowed grass at my corner property last Sunday ... the only 'safe' day to drive the mower down my busy highway to get there ... then I mowed at the house on Monday. As I was putting the mower up Monday, I saw a caterpillar on the mower, just below the seat where I sit. Yep ... I brought it to the house to photograph it and look it up, to identify it. I put it on a cardboard box on the back porch for the photo. Not knowing what its host plant was, I left it, as I wouldn't know what to feed it if I tried to put it in a hatching cage. It climbed onto the kitchen window, where it remains. I assume it will make its chrysalis there and I will get to watch the process, which I love. I believe it is a Red-spotted Purple Butterfly, host plants; Cherry, Oak; I have both, and Poplar. That caterpillar endured some major vibration if it was on the mower Sunday and Monday ... my mower is a behemoth diesel outfit. :-) Caterpillar photo and butterfly photos from the past. COOL!!!!
