Buddy

This gallery is not for the faint of heart, I PROMISE, but it's a sad reality for some dogs. On April 13, I was looking for birds to photograph. I was in an area about 2 miles from my house, a local, 'community' garbage dump site. I had the window down, listening for birds, when this dog walked past my car. He was covered in mange and the most emaciated dog I have ever personally witnessed. I began, on April 13, feeding him 4 times a day. I was able to devote this time due to being off work because of hip replacement surgery. Each time I went, I documented him with photos. He mainly lived under an overturned sofa, but I saw him utilize an old dog bed that someone had dumped at the site. There were times when he moved that bed from one area to another. I took him food and water. Once I watched him pick up the stainless steel bowl of water and move it into the shade, this was before it rained and filled low areas with drinkable rainwater. I set up a crate to eventually try to catch him. A rescue lady in Gassville agreed to take him, mange and all. I think he was beginning to trust me. He loved boiled eggs, corn bread, raw meat, kefir, jerky treats and bones. I fed him well, 4 times a day for 5 days. My biggest fear was that someone would shoot him, which is what happened on April 17. I fed him at 4:00 p.m., then went back at 7:00 for his last feeding. He was under his sofa, motionless, even after I called 'his name'. I'd wormed him that day and feared the worm medicine had killed him, until closer observation ... someone shot him between the eyes. I feel sure they thought they were doing him a favor, it was a well placed bullet and I know he didn't suffer. I thought he deserved a chance. A dog who obviously survived all odds of survival. Sad ending for me, but I know he's in a better place. I had Pet Cremation Services of Arkansas pick up his body, and his ashes were brought back to me. Click on each photo for some comments. I called him Buddy.
