Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Devils Tower

Mount Rushmore was created by the sculptor Gutzon Borglum. It is careved in the granite of the Black Hills of South Dakota. It has the faces of four US presidents, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The project began in 1927 and over 400 people worked on it. President Calvin Coolidge dedicated the memorial in 1927, commencing 14 years of work. Only six years were spent on actual carving. Money was the main problem. Borglum died in March 1941. Borglm's son, Lincoln supervised the completion of the heads. Work stopped in 1941 on the eve of U.S entry into World War II. Not far from Mt Rushmore is the Crazy Horse Memorial. It was dedicated in 1948 by Chief Standing Bear. It was designed by and worked on by Korczak Ziolkowski till his death in 1982. This is a 3d memorial not a relief like Mt Rushmore. All of Mt Rushmore can fit within Crazy Horse's head. This monument will represent Crazy Horse pointing straight ahead and saying "My lands are where my dead lie buried". Devils tower in northeastern Wyoming was the nation's first national monument. It rises 867 feet above it's base and 1.5 acres across on the top. Indian legend has it that bears were chasing three squaws and the spirits lifted the land they were standing on to rescue them. The bears tried to climb the tower but kept sliding down leaving vertical claw marks in the tower.
