Dixie Caverns is located in a campground by the same name in Salem Virginia. It is a 45 minute tour and the caverns go above ground level. The story goes that they were discovered in the 1920's when seven boys saved a dog named Dixie that fell into a hole at the top of a hill. When the boys followed the dog into the hole, the caverns were discovered. They were open to the public a few years later. Unfortunately the original owners broke the tips off of the stalactites and sold them as souvenirs. You can see this damage in some of the pictures. Of course, you are no longer allowed to touch any part of the cavern except for one piece called the wishing piece. As an RVer, it was a fun place to stop for the night and see the caverns.
