Silver Salmon Creek Alaska - Coastal Bears

This was a trip to Alaska of photographer friends to photograph the brown coastal bears. We stayed at the Silver Salmon Creek Lodge. It was July and the cubs born in the spring were a few months old. To reach the Lodge, we took a four person plane from Anchorage. There is no landing strip or roads near the lodge so the plane landed on the beach. The electricity supplied to the lodge was from solar panels and generators. We also took a boat trip to Duck Island to see Horned Puffins. We were a small group of eight and had our own guide. Our mode of transportation to see the bears was an ATV driven by the guide that pulled us in small metal carts. Only four fit in one cart so we had two carts hooked together. Sometimes crossing the streams and creeks we had to get out of the cart and walk across. To get to Duck Island, we had to take a small boat. Getting in and out of the boat was an adventure. They anchored the boat off the shore and the tide had come in enough so that we could not get out without being in hip deep water. Yes we had hip boots on, but those of us who are short, namely me, did get some very cold water in their hip boots. This was an amazing trip.
