it is 98 ft (30m) up to the top of the temple of Kukulcan, yet only 79ft (24m) to its base on top of the pyramid, so a steep yet doable climb...descending is another story...the risers are higher than standard steps, and the treads much shallower...going up only the toes fit on the treads, but coming back down only your heels fit, and that makes it tricky, and dangerous
in 2006 a San Diego woman negotiating the steps fell to her death...wear, damage, and graffiti from tourists was already concerning, and the fatality a final straw, promptimg a ban on climbing to the temple
