He Sapa

Black Hills NF, South Dakota

with stands of coniferous trees giving it a dark appearance from a distance, the region was named He Sapa, or Black Ridge, by native Oglala Lakota...this was later anglicised as the Black Hills

A remarkable landscape. It looks at once inviting and challenging to explore. I see on Google Earth that the Black Hills National Forest is extensive, large enough to "lose" oneself in.
