long before being co-opted by the Christian church and other commercial interests, on Samhain, the eve of the ancient Celtic new year, offerings were made to appease the spirits...for some the traditions linger on

This is a marvelous shot to accompany your commentary about Samhain, which signaled the end of harvest and the beginning of winter, or as I like to think of it, the Long Dark Teatime of the Soul (apologies to Douglas Adams!). V

A wonderful atmosphere with this lighting and shadows.
For me the old ways are preferable. Always enjoyed seeing the bonfires on top of mountains in Germany during the Solstice.
