coal

Wilkeson, Washington

Wilkeson is one of the few surviving towns that sprung up when coal was discovered along the Carbon River, and mining it began in the late 19th century

operations began here in 1874, involving a large bank of coke ovens which were active until the 1970s

Love those old buildings! My great-grandfather settled in the South Bay area near Olympia before Washington became a State. He immigrated from Wales.

I like seeing down the walkway. For some reason my eyes immediately landed on the giant ice cream cone. Wonder why?

I like the perspective here. Someone took a lot time to paint those columns. Interesting information.

Good depth in this well captured image David. "Coal", When is BC going to stop mining it and exporting it to Asia (mainly China}, only to have them pollute the air and have the smoke contaminate the world, even our skies. We're such hypocrites!! We did the same with asbestos - stopped its use here some 30 years ago, but continued its export for another 20+ years, just to keep the mines in Quebec running and rake in the export $$..
