First Nations people fished the waters here for thousands of years, but Europeans moved in during the 19thC...Herbert Steves bought land in 1886, and began laying out the town of Steveston...by the 1890s there were 45 salmon canneries in operation, and pre WW1 it was promoted as 'Salmonopolis'...the canneries are gone now, but it is still an active fishing port
