sugar fix

Hood River, Oregon

as a young lad would collect, often from construction sites, soda pop bottles to trade in at the corner store...each bottle was worth two cents, enough for a small paper bag of penny candy (blackballs, and several other junk food delicacies, were three for a penny)...five bottles though would mean having a dime to spend, so it was possible to buy a chocolate bar, or another bottle of Pepsi, 7 Up, or Hires Root Beer...with a bit of endeavour it was often possible to get a serious sugar fix

Luckily for me I never had a sweet tooth, so your entire description did not apply to me. Plus I don't recall bottles laying around to collect. The old style bottles are available here as they still use them in Mexico.

Looking forward to visiting friends in Hood River this weekend.

I'm fascinated by the Autocar in the bg ?? Being brought up in boarding schools, collecting bottles didn't happen :) I love John V's description of the coconut covered long john - mmm I'd collect bottles any day for one of those. :)

We would collect bottles along the highways, we would get 3 cents each and the bottom of the “Coke” bottles would say where the bottle was made,

Great bring-back-memories image and description David. I recall searching for $0.02 soft drink bottles along a four lane expressway in my younger days. Our only source of pocket money - no allowances those days LOL

The story and the photo brings back memories. I used to fill my red wagon with all the empty bottles and walk to the store to turn them in. Boy, those bottles made a lot of noise clinking away as I walked to town.

I remember doing that. Hid payday once when came across a stash of bottles discarded by a local hotel - poor shop keeper wasn't too impressed with having to redeem them,

Did this too! There was a long hedge along Prince Street and every week or so I could work my way along it. The result was getting enough for a big beautiful white frosting, coconut covered, cream filled long john at Milliner’s Bakery for 15 cents! I would like to thank the people who stocked “My Hedge” every week! V

Excellent capture which brings back fond memories of my childhood as well. Love your captioned narrative.
