Ruby Beach, Olympic Peninsula, Washington

responsible hiking, or visiting any natural location, ethically obliges people to leave no trace...sometimes though, it can be tempting to add a modest sign you were there

A very compelling image that would not have nearly the impact it has if it were color. I love those fascinating repeating stacks of stone that somehow brings images of alien spacemen to my mind. ~BV~

A really cool sign that you were there. No harm done since it is all natural. This made for a great subject to photograph. It really works well in black and white and has so many wonderful values/tones. I know that I really enjoyed my visit to Ruby Beach. Voted

Some traces are less offensive than others.

At least it wasn't a plastic bag or other detritus. A small cairn doesn't offend.

What a great old piece of wood and decorated to perfection with some natural ornaments! V

In this case the hikers were using endemic material and added to the interest, so I think it is OK. V

A very interesting remnant to leave behind. Reminds me of similar things I saw in Iceland. Lovely light and texture in your capture of it. V.

The smooth stones make a neat contrast to the driftwood V

In mono this is wonderful. But yes, it is best to leave no trace on ones' visit in natural areas. V
