cabbage tree

Otago Peninsula, South Island

the young leaves of this tree were used as a vegetable by early settlers, and reportedly tasted like cabbage...the Maori also prized the root of the tree which they first steamed before eating

The famous Ti Kouka at Clairmont. An old friend. It's going to be a sad day when he finally succumbs to the elements.
