No Stick - Black Rat Snake

Sussex Branch Trail, Byram, New Jersey

This black rat snake was looking for an easy lunch by laying absolutley still and pretending to be a harmless, immobile stick.
These snakes are not venomous. They can grow from 3 feet to about 9 feet in length. They live off frogs, small fish and rodents. They hunt mostly during the night in the summer, but they can also be found during day time hours. They are excellent climbers and love to hang out in trees too.
